Welcome to the Kea School Reading page.

At Kea, we believe that teaching children to read is a priority if they are to become articulate, free-thinking, independent learners.

We aim for children to be able to:
  • Read accurately, fluently and with understanding
  • Apply a knowledge of structured synthetic phonics in order to decode unfamiliar words with increasing accuracy and speed
  • Apply a knowledge of words that cannot be phonetically decoded, using a range of strategies
  • Be able to read with expression, clarity and confidence
  • Develop a good linguistic knowledge of vocabulary and grammar
  • Read and respond to a wide range of genres ,text types, and books from other cultures, expressing their preferences coherently
  • Read books by Cornish authors to discover and enjoy facts and stories from our Cornish history and culture.
  • Develop and articulate their own views on subject matters read about, while respecting the views expressed by other readers and authors
  • Be able to access and enjoy books through careful provision and support, enabling them to overcome any barriers to reading
  • Enjoy reading in their future life , both for pleasure and other purposes, helping them to become independent, thoughtful learners

WORLD BOOK DAY

During Book Week Kea CP School joined hundreds of schools for lots of  exciting online 'Author Events' with Scholastic. Foundation class and KS1 joined Julia Donaldson for an introduction to her new book, 'A Pocketful of Songs'. They sang along to songs about some of Julia's famous story characters, like 'Super Worm' and 'The Ugly Five'. On Book Day Year 1  created their own Julia Donaldson  story, based on 'The Snail and the Whale'.
